Smena 8M is a cosmetic update of the Smena-8. The body is a rectangular box with a hinged back. Weather symbols have been added to the lens to help set the exposure and symbols have been added to the focusing ring. The self timer has been deleted. There is a metal plate along the top of the Smena-8M camera in brushed chrome. The case is made of black plastic with "LOMO" in Cyrillic block letters embossed into the lens cover.
