Bayonet Adapters
A bayonet coupling is a way of attaching a lens, or a lens accessory such as a filter or hood, typically by a push-and-twist action. It has the advantage of being faster to mount or demount than a screw-thread, and it automatically puts the lens or accessory in a certain alignment once mounted.
A bayonet lens mount is a secure and efficient attachment system that allows photographers to quickly and effortlessly connect lenses to their camera bodies. Named after the bayonet-style knife due to its fast and secure locking mechanism, bayonet mounts have become a standard in the world of photography.
The Bayonet Advantage:
- Swift Attachment: The bayonet design enables photographers to attach and detach lenses rapidly, ideal for capturing spontaneous moments without the hassle of intricate manual screwing.
- Secure Locking Mechanism: Bayonet mounts provide a robust locking system, ensuring a stable connection between the lens and camera body, minimizing the risk of accidental detachment during crucial shots.
Drawbacks:
- Loose fit: most bayonet mounts rely on springs under the lugs that pull a lens toward the camera. This is a practical solution to compensate for some manufacturing tolerances, but this may result in inclination of a heavy lens optical axis. This will result in uneven image sharpness across the frame area.
Positive Lock mounts (the most prominent is the Arri PL one) solve this problem, using a solid retaining ring instead of springs. This allows holding even relatively heavy lenses without risk of a gap appearing between the lens and camera mount.
